Avocado was introduced in India very late. However, the fruit is very nutritious (up to 4% protein and 30% fat with a wide range of vitamins and minerals). Avocado does not have a sweet taste, is slightly oily in the mouth and, while nutritious, is not considerably appetizing to most Indians.

Avocado flowers are not fragrant or attractive. Self-pollination is rare in avocados and requires a good condition to be viable. Although self-pollination through the wind has been noted, it is dependent on climatic conditions.
The male and female parts of the flower bloom independently, and this makes self-pollination difficult for avocados. Avocado’s pollination depends on other pollinators, including bees. Due to the unattractive nature of avocado flowers, it is important to place beehives near avocado plants to increase pollination. Adding hives at 5-10% increases pollination in avocados.
Avocado is a resource-intensive plant as far as climate change is considered. It requires more water than other trees, is intolerant of water stagnation, and is susceptible to diseases such as root rot. You should choose the soil that is wet and dry, not too moist at any time. Avocados also require full sunlight.

Climatic, Soil Conditions and Water requirement
Avocados are intolerant to saline conditions. They require a pH of 5-7 and are suitable for tropical and warm parts. It cannot tolerate dry cold wind, or frost. Thus North Indian weather is not suitable. Climatically, the humid, warm climate, typical of tropical and semi-tropical conditions, is perfect for avocados. It can tolerate some rain during summer, and thus Kerala and Coorg are excellent conditions for avocado. Coastal areas of Kerala should be avoided entirely even if the climatic conditions are suitable due to the saline nature of the region.
Avocado Farming Area in India
Avocado is not commercially practising widely in India. The most prominent projects include one in Bhopal, which runs privately and one in Tamil Nadu. The pilot project runs privately and by the government in various states to see if it’s suitable and varieties farmers can cultivate commercially. Some projects are still in their infancy, and the commercial level of farming avocado is still being considered with scepticism. Fortunately, most of the results are on the positive side when it comes to pilot projects. Some of the varieties are already being chosen, the chances of these varieties being commercial for local use.
